Orange Julius
Name: Orange Julius
Type of Food: Fruit Smoothie
Interesting Fact: The unique Orange Julius® name was inspired by Julius Freed’s friend, Bill Hamlin, who trying to keep up with hoards of thirsty customers shouted: “Give me an orange, Julius!”
History: The first location was an orange juice stand opened in Los Angeles in 1926, by a man named Julius Freed. Sales were initially modest. In 1929, Bill Hamlin, Freed’s real estate broker, developed a mixture that made the acidic orange juice less bothersome to his stomach. Freed’s stand began serving the drink, which had a frothier, creamier texture. The sales at the stand increased substantially after the introduction of the new drink. In 1987, Orange Julius became a fully-owned subsidiary of International Dairy Queen. At present, Orange Julius has more than 200 stand-alone stores and more than 225 combination Dairy Queen/Orange Julius locations in the U.S. plus additional locations in Canada and other international markets.
